WHAT IS RECYCLE BY DESIGN?
Recycle by Design provides a framework for initiating a ‘challenge’ that engages and incentivizes local and regional public-private partnership teams to accelerate “outside the box” strategies that increase recycling. The challenge will facilitate a heightened awareness leading towards the effective capture and reuse of valuable materials circulating through the waste stream by developing and implementing new project opportunities based on the introduction of global ‘best practices’. WHY IS RECYCLE BY DESIGN IMPORTANT?
The foundation of a Recycle by Design challenge is building partnerships between communities, businesses and governments to find solutions to increase local recycling, build stronger local economies and create environmentally-friendly communities. The outcome is new infrastructure being put in place that will go well beyond just increasing recycling rates over the short term. This infrastructure investment will be business driven and because of that will have the capability of improving recycling performance on a permanent basis contributing to an integrated resource management system that will perpetuate continued growth.
HOW DOES RECYCLE BY DESIGN SUPPORT A CIRCULAR ECONOMY?
A circular economy is a cradle-to-cradle approach that takes into account each aspect of the value chain. The key is to find value – usage, monetary, environmental – at each stage including at recovery. Recycle by Design utilizes innovative ideas to maximize resource recovery.
